Sawa, in Ichikawa Town, Kanzaki District, Hyogo.
A farming village opened at the foot of the hills beside the Ichikawa River.
Its name carries the character for water, greenery, and abundance.
The character sawa describes a place where water springs and grasses grow. It also carries the sense of nourishment and abundance. Few records explain the village name, but Sawa's setting beside the Ichikawa River seems to echo it well. In the Edo period the name was written 沢村; today the older form 澤 is used.
During the Edo period, this village belonged to Jinsai District and was known as Sawamura. Little remains in the records, but it was a small farming settlement that opened fields along the Ichikawa River.
In 1889, the municipal system brought Sawa together with Misa, Tsurui, Kanzaki, Tanaka, and Komuro as part of Tsurui Village. In 1896, Jinto and Jinsai districts merged to form Kanzaki District. Village life continued as part of Tsurui.
Enjuji Temple was opened in Sawa in 1926. Records name Hori Tasaburo as its founder. In 1930, its famous One Character, One Stone pagoda was built, and in 1942 the temple was formally named Kotokuzan Enjuji. It is not an ancient temple, but a comparatively new place of faith whose story remains close to the village.
In July 1955, Tsurui Village merged with Amaji, Kawabe, and Seka to form Ichikawa Town, and Sawa has continued as one of its communities. Rice fields spread beside the Ichikawa River, while a roadside Jizo known as the Genroku Jizo keeps watch. In this small village, the time of everyday life continues to gather quietly.
